A cataract is a clouding of the normally clear lens of your eye. For people who have cataracts, seeing through cloudy lenses is a bit like looking through a frosty or fogged-up window. Most cataracts develop slowly and don’t disturb your eyesight early on. But with time, cataracts will eventually interfere with your vision.

Cataracts are very common in older people. By age 65, more than half of all Americans either have a cataract or have had cataract surgery. A cataract can occur in either or both eyes.

Signs & Symptoms

  • Clouded, blurred or dim vision
  • Glare
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Seeing “halos” around lights
  • Poor night vision
  • Frequent changes in eyeglass or contact lens prescription
  • Fading or yellowing of colors
  • Double vision in a single eye

Treatments

Through a regular comprehensive eye exam, you and your eye care professional can discuss if and when you might need treatment.

Cataracts can often be managed for years with contacts or glasses, brighter lighting, anti-glare sunglasses, or magnifying lenses.  But as they develop, they can become more problematic.  When these measures no longer help, an implantable ocular lens (IOL) is the treatment of choice. This procedure involves removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with an artificial lens.

For most people, there is no rush to remove cataracts because they usually don’t harm the eye.

If you have cataracts in both eyes that require surgery, the surgery will be performed on each eye at separate times, usually four to eight weeks apart.
